Sypnosis: Combustible dust hazards management is an ongoing process safety focus across the world in various industrial sectors including pharmaceuticals, chemical plants, food processing, woodworking, and metal-powder handling facilities. Though the first documented combustible dust explosion occurred in 1785, the management systems and work processes for managing combustible dust hazards might not be as matured as their counterparts that deals with flammable and toxic hazards. Having said that, the combustibility and explosivity mechanisms associated with combustible dusts are a little bit complex and hence it poses some challenges to properly assess and manage combustible dust risks. Some of the critical aspects of the combustible dust hazard management would be covered in this short technical talk, which includes:
• What is a combustible dust?
• Case study
• What are the hazards associated with combustible dusts?
• How do we characterize dusts?
• How do we typically manage the risks?
• What are the typical risk control measures?
• Reference to global standards
