Fire safety forms a critical aspect of the built
environment in ensuring occupant life safety, and property protection against
fire spread and damage. The regulatory regime and fire safety landscape present
challenges to owners, practitioners and the building and construction industry
in general.
The course will provide
participants with a holistic overview of how fire safety is regulated in
Singapore. Salient aspects of the legislative provisions, plans submission
process under the prescriptive and performance-based regime, code compliance
and professional duties and responsibilities will be shared. The management of
fire safety at site and emergency response will also be discussed.
About The Speaker
Christopher Tan Eng Kiong
Christopher Tan joined the Academic Group at Singapore Institute of Technology in Jan 24
after 40 years of active career in the SCDF and private consulting. He has rich and blended
expertise in the fire regulatory regime from his stint as Director of Fire Safety in SCDF. He
acquired industry experience in fire safety and fire engineering when he headed the Fire
Safety Consultancy at Surbana Jurong (SJ). He was involved in local and overseas projects
in the urban built environment and mega infrastructures.
He has served as Chairman of Fire Code 2018 Committee, Code of Practice for Rail Transit
System (2017) and Fire Safety Engineers Qualifying Panel. He is the Hon Fire Safety Advisor
of REDAS, Immediate Past President of IFE Singapore and serves in National Fire and
Emergency Preparedness Council, Singapore Certification Body Advisory Committee (UL)
and Singapore Environment Council Green Label Committee.
He holds B.Sc (Building) and a Master in Fire Safety Engineering. He is a Fellow of the
Institution of Fire Engineers (UK). He is ACTA-trained.
