Dispersion of Dust
particles in Sufficient Quantity and concentration in the present of an
ignition source and oxygen can cause rapid combustion known as a deflagration. If this event is confined
by an enclosure such as building, room, vessel or process equipment such as Dust collectors, bucket elevators, Bins
& silos, milling equipment, mixing equipment, reactor, dryers, cyclone
separator, conveyors & duct work etc... etc…the resulting rapid
pressure rise will cause an explosion & will destroy or rupture most of the process equipment as they are
often not built to withstand or contained such a rapid pressure rise!
A dust explosion can be very catastrophic and cause employee deaths,
injuries, and destruction of entire buildings. In many combustible dust
accidents, employers and employees were unaware that a hazard
even existed. It is important to determine if your company has this hazard, and if you
do, you must take actions now to prevent tragic
consequences.
Following a
fatal dust explosion incident in Singapore in Feb21, MOM have identified at
least 500 companies here are involved in handling or processing combustible powder,
as such MOM are commencing safety audit program to ensure compliance to
established International Codes & Standards! In the meantime, Singapore Standard SS 667: 2020 Code of practice for
handling, storage and processing of combustible dust have also just been released for owners /
operators to understand how to mitigate Dust explosion Risk starting from Dust Hazards Analysis program!
